I am originally from a small beach town in Massachusetts and it took me moving to the city to realize that I did not feel comfortable living here.
With that consistent disconnect in mind, I started researching beach towns near New York City, then traveled to them each weekend and photographed them as familiar, yet still isolated, spaces. I photographed in this square format to create a sense of seclusion in each landscape, to make them stand out on their own, but also work together as a series. To blend together as one town. I wanted to show a noticeable distance in the photos to remind the viewer that I am still an outsider in each place. This series is documentation of myself, attempting to find my placement, to find a sense of “home”. Home as a feeling rather than as a literal place and the importance of place in a person’s life.
